Ghost Shrimp are commonly used as feeders in the aquarium hobby. Though they are often fed to larger predators, Ghost Shrimp also make great aquarium companions in small groups. Their see through bodies make it easy to watch them eat and digest food and can be quite interesting creatures. The lifespan of these shrimp very greatly, from a few days up to one year. With all shrimp, swings in water parameters can be harmful or deadly, and should be watched closely especially in smaller sized aquariums (10 gallons and less).
Ghost Shrimp will easily breed, when a female is carrying eggs you will notice tons of green eggs on her underside. She will often fan her bottom section to continually keep any algae or fungi from growing on the eggs. When they begin to hatch she will release them. Baby Shrimp are prone to being trapped in filters, it is recommended to use a sponge filter, or an intake filter sponge to avoid losing any.
Shrimp will feed on detritus and algae around the aquarium but it is best to supplement them with a pellet like Nutrispheres. Using a feeding dish will help reduce waste and make it easy to monitor your shrimp who will often hide. You can also feed blanched veggies, we recommend using a feeding cage so you can observe your shrimp and be able to remove any excess, uneaten food easily.
